The ID card is only valid at companies and shops that have an agreement for its use. At the moment, this does not apply to airports or businesses abroad.
In the first version of the ID card in the BankID app, you must have a Norwegian national identity number and a Norwegian passport, or a national ID card, in order to use the service. This is because we use the Norwegian national identity number in the ID document to link it to the identity number in the BankID certificate. These identity numbers must match.
Our ambition is to eventually accommodate foreign users and people with a D-number, so that these users can also start using the service.
If you have a national identity number and are a citizen of an EEA/EFTA country, you can book an appointment with the police to obtain a national ID card.
You activate the ID card by following these steps:

When you tap “Show ID” in the app, a QR code is generated that can be scanned at the checkout in the store or at the place that needs to check your ID. When you need to generate a new QR code, you must verify yourself using facial recognition, fingerprint, or your phone’s PIN. The QR code is valid for 30 seconds, or until it has been scanned. If it is not scanned within 30 seconds, you must generate a new one.
You can delete the ID card and associated data under “Settings” in the BankID app, and then by pressing the “Delete me” button. Stø stores data for 30 days after deletion for security and legal reasons.
The ID card can be scanned with a barcode reader, and data about the customer will then be displayed in the store’s point-of-sale system. The data is retrieved from the end user’s passport or national ID card. Which data is shown is governed by the agreement between the merchant and Stø.

We, Stø, store the data contained in the chip of your Norwegian passport or national ID card, such as your national identity number, date of birth, name, photo, document number and expiry date. BankID BankAxept securely stores all data from the ID document used during activation. All data is encrypted, and only you can unlock this data when you use it. The key to unlock the encrypted data is stored in your BankID app.

To start using the ID card in the BankID app, you must have activated the BankID app with a valid BankID. Anyone who has done this can activate the service by scanning a Norwegian passport or national ID card.
The phone must support NFC (Near Field Communications) in order to scan a passport or national ID card. Most newer smartphones support this. If the phone works with, for example, Apple Pay or Google Pay, it will also be able to scan passports.
Apple users must have iOS 15 or higher and Android users must have Android 7 or higher.
The ID card in the BankID app is a digital ID for use in physical situations. It can be used at shops or companies that have an agreement to use the service.
You can use the ID card in the BankID app to identify yourself at Posten, Vinmonopolet, Bunnpris and Norgesgruppen’s grocery stores – as well as when you’re entering a venue that has security staff from PSS Securitas at the door. But new areas of use are constantly being added – both physical and self-service.
An ID card in the BankID app means you always have identification with you, and can easily show ID at shops or businesses that have installed the system and have an agreement to use it. For businesses, it makes identity checks both faster and more secure, since the data displayed has been validated by BankID.
