ID verification

BankID works every day to make life even safer for our 4.7 million users. In the time ahead, some users will therefore receive a message in the BankID app asking them to confirm their identity by scanning their passport or national ID card and their face. This is part of stricter security requirements and will make BankID even more certain that you are really you.
Who needs to identify themselves again?
Many users of the BankID app who have not previously scanned a passport or national ID card in the app must identify themselves again. The reason for this is that we need to document that the BankIDs in use are in fact being used by the correct person.
You will soon be asked to confirm your identity when you open the BankID app. We are sending out messages in batches, and you will receive a notification in the app when it’s your turn.
People with foreign passports and people under 18 do not need to complete a check now, but work is underway to put a technical solution in place for these groups.
What do you have to do?
The ID check is done by scanning your passport or national ID card in the BankID app. This way, we can link you as a person to your BankID.
- Make sure you have a valid passport or physical ID card available at home. If you do not have a valid Norwegian passport, you still have time to obtain one.
- You must also make sure that you have the latest version of the BankID app. Go to Google Play or the Apple App Store to update the BankID app to the newest version.
- When it’s your turn, you’ll find information in the app about what you need to do.
- Follow the steps as shown. If you need help scanning your passport or ID card, or with any other steps in the verification, you can ask someone you trust.
It is quick, secure and efficient to confirm your identity in the BankID app on your mobile. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact your bank.
Questions and answers
Some users of the BankID app must confirm their identity in the app. This means that users have to scan their passport or national ID card and their own face. This measure makes BankID even more secure.
The background is requirements from the EU and means that the BankID app can only be used by people who have completed a valid and documented ID verification. Some users have previously had the BankID app activated in ways that do not meet today’s security requirements, for example by using a code device sent by mail.
This applies to most users of the BankID app.
It does not apply:
- persons under 18
- people who only use a code device
- people with foreign passports. If you receive a notification in the app and you have a foreign passport, you can ignore it. A technical solution is being developed for this group.
Those who are covered by the ID verification will receive a notification directly in the BankID app explaining what they need to do. Users who are not asked to confirm their identity do not need to do anything.
The requirements to confirm identity do not currently apply to users of the BankID app who are under 18 years of age, or to users with a foreign passport. Those who only use a code device with BankID are also not included. ID verification solutions for these groups are being developed and will be launched at a later date.
You are asked to:
- scan passport or national ID card
- scan your face
Everything happens digitally in the BankID app. A step-by-step description of the process can be found at bankid.no.
This is done to ensure that it is the same person in the physical and digital worlds. Comparing the identity document with the facial image reduces the risk of identity theft, fraud, and other crime.
Yes. BankID complies with strict requirements for privacy and information security. The information is used only for identity verification and is processed in accordance with applicable regulations. More details about the storage and processing of data can be found at bankid.no.
It is entirely possible to get help to confirm your identity. Family or others can assist by holding the phone and helping you through the process. However, we emphasize that you must trust the people who are helping you, and you must never share your BankID password or PIN code with anyone. BankID and the banks are also committed to providing good information and support to users who find this challenging.
The requirements for confirming identity do not currently apply to those who only use a BankID code device. ID verification solutions for code device users will be launched at a later date.
You can therefore still use the code device, but we encourage everyone to start using the app, which has better security and universal design. If you want to start using the BankID app, you can confirm your identity by scanning your passport or ID card in the app.
Users who are subject to the requirements will receive a notification in the app when it is their turn. It is recommended that you verify your identity as soon as you receive the notification in the app.
Updated and detailed information about the process can be found here at bankid.no. If you have questions related to your BankID or need practical assistance, you can also contact your bank.
If you don’t have a valid Norwegian passport or national ID card, you still have time to order a new one. Your BankID can be used as before until it is in place.
People with a foreign passport can ignore the notification for now and use BankID as before. We are working on a technical solution for this group as well.
The app will continue to work and is safe to use, but to meet requirements and be on the safe side, everyone must verify their identity in the app.
We want to carry out as many ID checks as possible, as quickly as possible. However, no one will lose their BankID if they do not complete the ID check, out of consideration for digital inclusion.
Yes, it is secure and you can use it safely. Identity verification is about making sure that the right person is the one starting to use the BankID app.
